AKC Canine Health Foundation Annual Research Awards(Wanted to get this information in some time ago, but there just wasn't room). May 30, 1996 - The AKC Canine Health Foundation has announced the distribution of over $400,000 in grants to support canine health research. Among the successful applicants are eleven of the leading research institutions in the nation including Baker Institute at Cornell University, Texas A&M University, University of California at Berkeley and Davis, University of Pennsylvania, University of Wisconsin and the National Cancer Institute. Funds will support research projects focused on a wide range of diseases that effect dogs including seven research grants for canine bloat, kidney disorders, progressive retinal atrophy, cystinuria and epilepsy. Another set of five grants was made to research centers for mapping the canine genome. Canine health education was an additional focus of the grants. Two grants were made in this area. A grant to the University of California, Davis, Center for Companion Animal Health will support an international symposium on canine hypothyroidism. A second grand to Dr. Patricia Wilkie at the University of Minnesota will sponsor the development of a reference resource for dog breeders on canine genetics. The next grant cycle began in June 1996 and awards and funding should be announced in May 1997. |
