Blast from the Past
The following items have been sent to us from our friends "down-under" which they were
able to dig up from the archives of their library in "The Stock-Keeper and Fanciers
Chronicle," a weekly Journal about Dogs, Poultry, Pigeons, Rabbits, Cage Birds & Pet
Stock. Hope you enjoy them. Items are copies exactly as they appeared at the time/place of
origin.
August 16, 1895
Valuable stock for immediate disposal - Grand fawn mastiff dog, registered, 20 months old,
by Iron Duke ex lady Dudley (bred by Captain Piddocke, London); this young dog possesses a
massive, short, blunt, wrinkled black face, good mount, drop ears, and I straight and
healthy. Stands over 30 in, and weighs 11 stone, good stud dog, one fault bars him the
show bench, otherwise worth 50 pounds; also silver-fawn brood bitch, registered as Clapham
Niobe, by Exeter Boanerges ex Exeter Lucretia (bred by Hutchins, Exeter), cost big money
when a puppy, guaranteed breeder and mother; also 10-week stock from above; specially find
dog, possessing handsome short wrinkled black face, perfect ears, limbs, and condition, a
future winner; grand bitch ditto; also heavy-boned dog, rather faulty ears; low prices

Mastiff bitch, 13 months old, beautiful fawn, with the usual perfect black markings, a
splendid disposition, chief fault is being shy when out, but has never been out more
than three times, capital yard dog, fit for exhibition and without a doubt will make a
champion brood bitch, by David Garrick (well known as a winner at many prominent shows)
ex Weleda, winner of 2nd prize Birmingham, only time shown, thus it will be seen that her
breeding is of the choicest; I will sell for the best offer, or will accept five pounds
ten shillings, very cheap - Joseph Leadbetter, Emporium, Fleetwood

Juno, Mastiff brood bitch, sire Monarch, by Champion Victo-Hugo out of Cambrian Princess,
by Champion Beau out of Modesty; dam Baroness, by Champion Crown Prince out of Lady Rowena,
by Rajah out of Negress; sire stood 33in., dam 31in; an excellent guard and companion; six
pounds six shillings - W. H. Cook, Orpington House, St. Mary’s Cray, Kent.

Champion Constable - Grandson of this celebrated dog for disposal, parents are both
winners, 6 months old, fawn with black muzzle, well grown, limbs like a lion, will make a
splendid companion or show dog, only reason for disposal being too large for owner;
approval with pleasure if all expenses paid, by carriage will be refunded to purchaser;
price four pounds four shillings, or exchange for pedigree sable or black Toy Pomeranian
bitch, about same age; deposit -- J. A. Armitage, King Street, Dukinfield, Cheshire.
